Wiped Out

I think I'm coming down with something.

Felt totally exhausted by the time I got home, even though I hardly did anything today that required physical activity or even heavy thinking.

Bummer.

Furor over Qpids Result

I still get taken aback by how angry and upset some people are by the Qpids Grand Finals result. Here are links to some of the more interesting comments:
  • Chinnie, MhyZel's 3rd PEX Thread. Argues that the show continuously changed the rules to ensure that PawEl won.
  • Chikadora's Qpids Postscript. Quotable excerpt: "It’s a competition to find the best loveTEAM! That’s why I don’t get why Pawel won. It’s supposed to be a team competition. Although I don’t agree that Paw can act well, let’s just say for argument’s sake that she can. Well then, that IS NOT ENOUGH to explain why they won. HELLO!!! Ano si Mikel? Props?"
  • Ann and KayeLa, JilWyn's 2nd PEX Thread. Argues that looks are not enough, and that talent has to count for something.
Oh, and in case you're curious, I've already written up my own thoughts on this subject, so no need to get into that once again.

Senseless deaths. Senseless lives.

I was channel surfing last night when I chanced upon the start of the Oprah Winfrey Show on Studio 23. They were featuring footage from investigative reports filed by journalists over the years from locations like Ethiopia, China, and Cambodia.

Two of the stories keep coming to mind today:
  • A 3-year old girl whom nurses say were minutes away from dying in famine-stricken Ethiopia, back in 1984. The footage was taken by a journalist from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). It was this coverage of Ethiopia, particularly the image of this little girl, that moved Sir Bob Geldof to organize Band-aid and led to the birth of the chart-topping single "Do They Know It's Christmas."
  • A 2-year old girl left alone in a "Dying Room" in one of China's many orphanages. Two British journalists posing as orphanage workers had sneaked in a video camera and managed to record footage of a little girl that had been left alone for 10 days in a "Dying Room." Chinese orphanage workers did not enter the room at all during those 10 days and only waited for other children to come and tell them whether or not the girl was still alive. She died four days after the journalists visited and the orphanage denied her existence when asked about her later. It's not clear why she was singled out to die. But she was frail, starving, filthy, and obviously in so much pain. I feel like crying whenever I think of her.
These journalists have made such a difference in the world simply by doing their jobs. They have called the world's attention to horrible events and have led people to assist financially (in the case of Band-aid) or moved people to open the doors of their homes and their hearts (through the rising number of Chinese baby girls being adopted).

At times like this, I feel very small and wonder why the heck I'm on this earth in the first place. Shows like that make me want to rethink my priorities and my life goals. Why am I here? What am I supposed to be doing?

Life's many problems and day-to-day hassles suddenly seem very small and meaningless right now. And I am overwhelmed by gratitude for the many blessings that I enjoy.

Editing Questions

Spent most of yesterday working on my org's next newsletter issue.

It's not the most fun thing in the world to be doing, but I have to admit there's some satisfaction when you finally finish editing all those articles.

One thing I haven't quite figured out yet, however, is where to draw the line when I'm editing someone else's work. Every time I feel the urge to change something, I have to force myself to think:
  • Am I changing it because what s/he's written isn't clear or easy to understand?
  • Am I changing it because it's grammatically incorrect?
  • Have I changed the meaning or message of the sentence or paragraph?
  • Am I changing it because I simply don't like his/her choice of words?
  • How much of the editing that I'm doing is true editing and how much is me imposing my own voice or personality on someone else's work?
I guess there are no easy answers to those questions. My adviser's only tip so far has been for me to get a copy of The Elements of Style, by Strunk and White. And while it's helpful as a grammar reference, it still doesn't give me any hard and fast rules for editing.

A JaRlan's Thoughts on the Qpids Grand Finals

I have to admit that I was totally surprised by the Qpids Love Council's decision to award the Qpids Grand Loveteam title to Paw and Mikel.

But now that it's been more than 24 hours since the Grand Finals aired, I find myself happy and content with the way things turned out. Why? Well, a lot of reasons:
  • JaRla's Thank You Video. The night of the Grand Finals (Sep 22), Margaux sent me a JaRla video clip which she had taken backstage before the taping. On that video, Carla and Janus thanked everyone who has been supporting them all throughout Qpids. I was so thrilled! I would have hugged Margz right then and there, if she were standing next to me! LOL. They looked happy and relaxed and it made my day because they knew that we've been supporting them.
  • Carla's September 23 Ktext. The next day, Carla's Ktext subscribers received two MMS messages from her. She and Janus were at the airport, getting ready to fly off to Bangkok! And they both looked incredibly happy. JaRla'ns on PEx were thrilled. :D
  • JaRla's Gifts and Messages to one another. During the Grand Finals episode, each loveteam had an opportunity share their gifts and messages with one another. Undeniably, JaRla had the sweetest and most kilig messages and sentiments. And their sincerity was so obvious. I think these two PEx posts from Jilwynistas KayeLa and Jaq say it best.
  • JaRla Winning the Voter's Choice Award. With 41% of the total votes, no less! I had heard earlier on Sunday morning that JaRla had won the Voter's Choice, but finding out that it was with 41% of the votes just made my day! Woohoo!
So in the end, I believe that JaRla got the best of both worlds. They won the equivalent of the "People's Choice" award, therefore proving that there's something magical in their tandem; but they don't have any pressure to live up to the expectations that come with the "Ultimate Loveteam" title.

Now as to why the loveteam of Paw and Mikel were the Love Council's choice, well, I have my own theory, but that's something that I'm only willing to share with friends. ;)

As one thing ends, something else begins

Qpids: The Reality Loveteam Search has finally come to an end, and while I'm ecstatically happy with the JaRla Labsteam (Janus del Prado & Carla Loren) receiving the Voter's Choice Award, it really saddens me to have to say goodbye to the show.

But as they say, all good things must come to an end, and now that I'm forced to give up one rather time-consuming form of entertainment, I have to admit I'm feeling somewhat at a loss as to what to do with all the free time I suddenly have.

So here it is... A new beginning. After much encouragement from one particular person who for now shall remain nameless (and therefore blameless -- hehe!), I decided to start this blog. I have no idea if it will lead to anything. Don't even know if I will have anything to post after this initial entry. But what the heck. Might as well give it a shot and see where it leads.
